Ethiopia First in Africa in Production of Hydropower

Ethiopia is ranked as the top hydropower producer in Africa by the International Hydropower Association (IHA). Ethiopia is first with 3,822 MW installed capacity. South Africa and Egypt follow with 3595 MW and 2,844 MWs respectively while DR Congo is ranked fourth with 2,593 MW.

Ethiopia is currently constructing different dams including the Grand Renaissance Dam which is expected to produce 6,450 MW of power when completed. The country also has two geothermal projects in the volcanically-active Rift Valley south of the capital Addis Ababa, Corbetti Plant and Tulu Moye Plant, which will be completed within eight year's time. Upon completion, the plants will produce a combined 1,000 MW of power.

The 2015-2020 development plan aims to boost the country's power generation to 17,346 MW.
