Ethiopia: GERD to Start Generating Power

Ethiopia’s largest dam project, Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), is set to start generating hydroelectric power in the current fiscal year as it has now reached 62 percent completion rate.

Debretsion Gebremichael, Board Chairman of the National Council for the Coordination of Public Participation for the Construction of GERD, commented the dam would commence to generate power as the construction got in full momentum. “The remaining 38 percent of the construction will continue while the dam will keep on generating hydroelectric power", he noted.

The dam was being built from dawn to dusk to ensure the dam would be complete, Debretsion explained.

The construction of the dam was started back in 2011 and it when it goes fully operational it will have installed power generating capacity of 6,450 megawatts.
