Ethiopia: Ethio telecom Threatens to Neutralize 2.7 Million Subscription

Ethiopia’s telecom monopole, Ethio-telecom, gave warning for its subscribers using cloned mobile telephone that it will defunct the subscription unless the clients change them within a year.

According to the state monopole, currently there are around 2.7 million cloned mobile phones in Ethiopia.

According to Abdurahim Ahmed, Corporate Communication Officer at Ethio-Telecom, Ethio Telecom had registered the identification number of all mobile phones there were in use in Ethiopia. it was following this registration that the enterprise identified the 2.7 million cloned mobile phones.

The registration helped prevent thefts and illegal entry of below standard mobile phones, thus created healthy competition for local manufacturers and importers mobile phone sets, Abdurahim noted.

Subscribers using cloned mobile phones would receive SMS or another mode of notification, the Communication Officer explained.

If any SIM card supporting telecom devices were not registered by Ethio telecom until September 17, 2017 they would be neutralized, Abdurahim explained.
