Ethiopia to Construct 5 Dry Ports

Ethiopia is planning to construct 5 dry ports at an outlay of 1.5 billion Birr. This was disclosed by Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics Services Enterprise (ESLSE) as part of its effort to handle the growing Ethiopia’s import-export market.

According to Desalegn Gebrehiwot, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of ESLSE, the new ports are going to be built in Hawassa, Dire Dawa, Mekelle, Kombolcha and Wereta cities.

The construction of Kombolcha, Dire Dawa and Mekelle dry ports has already commenced, while the construction of the remaining 2 ports will be launched soon, Desalegn explained.

When the ports go operational, they would contribute towards reducing transport costs and transit time, he furthered.

Currently it is Modjo Dry Port that handles 80 percent of Ethiopia’s import-export market. The dry port is situated 61 kilometers of the capital city and it is on the Ethiopia- Djibouti trade corridor. It was the first dry port and it started on a small scale 8 years ago.
