Ethiopia Generated 3.8 Billion Birr from Electric Power Export

During the first 10 months of the current fiscal year, Ethiopia generated 3.8 billion Birr from the export of electricity. Nevertheless, this was short of the target set by the beginning of the current fiscal year, 4.7 billion Birr.

According to Bizeneh Tolcha, Public Relations Head at the Ministry of Water, Irrigations and Electricity (MWIE), Ethiopia made 49.4 million USD from the export of power to Sudan and Djibouti.

Once the projects under construction are completed, Ethiopia plans to sell electric power to its neighboring countries. Among these countries Ethiopia signed power purchase agreement with Tanzania for 400 megawatt. Kenya has also showed interest to buy 200 megawatt and works on the construction of power transmission line project has been launched by the Chinese firm China Electric Power Equipment and Technology (CET).

According to Fana Broadcasting Corporation, Ethiopia’s hydropower, geothermal, wind and solar energy potentials are estimated up to 60,000 Megawatt.
