Ethiopia: Gidabo Irrigation Project Reach 92% Completion Rate

Ethiopia’s Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Electricity disclosed the construction of Gidabo irrigation Project reached 92 percent completion rate. Such was disclosed during field visit by senior officials at the Ministry.

Speaking at the event Kebede Gerba, State Minister for Water, Irrigation and Electricity, said construction of the major components for the project as well as 7 kilometers of canal work was completed.

The contractors were currently undertaking clearing work over 1000 hectare land to hold water during the coming rainy season, the State Minister explained.

When the project is concluded it is expected to ensure food security and enable farmers around it to produce more commodities for market and inputs for industries.

The Horn of Africa nation is constructing such irrigation schemes as part of the initiative to reduce the country’s dependence on rainfall for its agriculture. This was also reflected by the State Minister during his speech at the field visit.

When the construction of the project is completed, the dam will have the capacity to hold 62.3 million cubic meters of water and develop 14,000 hectare of land.
