Ethiopia: Zabidar Beer Joined Market with New Features

Zabidar Beer S.C. has joined Ethiopia’s beer market as the latest entrant with a beer which is 330 cl and has an alcohol content of 5 percent. The company has introduced pull of caps, also known as RipCap, for the first time in Ethiopia – meaning the beer bottles do not need bottle openers.

According to the General Manager of Zabidar, Gavin Brown, the brewer employed Belgian experience to brew as well as bottle the beer which combined malted barley, hops and water.

The factory is found at Gubre, near Wolkite town, in Southern Nations Nationalities and Peoples (SNNP). The company’s total investment is 1.2 billion Birr and has an initial production capacity of 350,000 hectoliters.

60 percent of Zabidar’s shareholding is owned by the Belgian Unibar. It was in 2014 that Jemar Hulegeb Industry S.C. (back then Zabidar Hulegeb Industry) joined hands with Unibar along with its 1,100 Ethiopian shareholders.
