Ethiopia: 30% of Construction Sites to Be Green Areas

In the aim of preventing urban air pollution, Ethiopia’s Ministry of Urban Development and Housing has started to implement a strategy that forces construction sites to reserve 30 percent of their allotment for green areas.

Commenting on the development, Getachew Hailemariam, State Minister for Urban Development and Housing, said the Ministry gave due attention to preventing urban air pollution.

Currently there is an office set up in the Ministry for the sole purpose of preventing urban air pollution and distributing manuals to states and city administrations.

Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), which was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015, stipulates construction activities undertaken in urban areas should take into consideration green development.
