Ethiopia: ERC Aims to Construct 2400 Km of Railway

Ethiopian Railways Corporation (ERC) disclosed it is conducting feasibility studies to commence the construction of more than 2400 kilometers of railway projects across Ethiopia.

According to Public Relations Heads at the Corporation, Dereje Tefera, the railway construction projects are scheduled to start in the coming 3 years with funds to be secured from financers. The projects included, among others, second phase of Addis Ababa Light Rail Transit, Modjo – Konso – Shashemene – Hawassa, Finoteselam – Bahir Dar – Werota – Woldia and Jima – Gurafera – Dima, Dereje explained.

Among these lines, Finoteselam – Bahir Dar – Werota – Woldia railway stretches for 454 kilometers. On the other hand, Modjo – Konso – Shashemene – Hawassa line extends for 950 kilometers.

ERC also intends to construct other railway line construction projects in the coming decade, including Sodo-Arbaminch-Weyto, Hawassa-Moyale-Iteya-Endeto-Ginir, Addis Ababa-Desie-Humera-Decho-Galafi lines.
