Ethiopia: ERA Constructed 1,412 Kilometers of Road

Ethiopian Roads Authority (ERA) disclosed a total of 1,412 kilometers of roads were constructed all over Ethiopia in the just concluded fiscal year. Nonetheless, the Authority’s plan was to construct about 1,557 kilometers of road, meaning the performance was 93 percent of the target set.

Samson Wondimu, Communication Director at ERA, said the Authority completed a total of 23 projects in different parts of Ethiopia. 28 agreements for the construction of main and feeder roads was also concluded, he furthered.

According to the Communication Director, the Authority has also undertaken emergency, heavy and regular maintenance for 20,690 kilometers of roads.

Most of the projects were undertaken by domestic contractors, Samson noted. Nonetheless, he attributed lack of adequate capacity and halting in some of the projects as gap in the accomplishment of the Authority’s plan.

ERA halted 5 road construction projects, including Hawassa – Chiko and Chiko – Yirgachefe projects, for reasons of poor performance, the Communication Director explained.

According to Samson Ethiopia has 110 thousand kilometers long road and the Authority aims to increase this to 220 thousand kilometers by the end of the second Growth and Transformation Period (GTP II).
