Ethiopia Prepared 13 Million Hectares Land for Cultivation

Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resource (MANR) disclosed it has prepared 13 million hectares of land across Ethiopia to be cultivated in Meher season.

During the season, the main crops that are harvested are wheat, maize and teff. Currently these crops cover 7 million hectares of land across the country.

Oromia State takes the lion share of the land availed for cultivation, 6 million hectares. Amhara State comes next with 4.5 million hectares of land.

Comparing the total area prepared for cultivation with last year’s there is a 4 percent increase.
Speaking on the harvest season, Alemayehu Hailu, Public Relation Head at MANR, said “The harvest began timely and will last for the coming two weeks”.

Ethiopia’s government aims to collect 319 million quintals of agricultural products in the season. It has also imported close to 12 million quintals of fertilizers for the harvest.
