Haile Gebresilassie, Ethiopia’s legendary long distance athlete got honey export approval from European nations including Germany and the Netherlands, according to The Reporter.

Following the delivery of his first product to the local market labeled Haile Mar (Haile Honey), the athlete is embarking on exports to European countries.

Haile is producing the honey from his 200 hectares of coffee farm in Sheka area of Southern Ethiopia, he told The Reporter.

He said it would take him at least a year to launch exports. He also indicated that his customers specifically from Germany and the Netherlands require high standards that include packaging, labeling, transportation means and related issues to insure the quality of the honey.

The sample honey product which was sent to Europe has got positive response from users there, he noted.

Haile is currently engaged in Hotel and resorts, gold, coffee, agriculture, import and export and real estate businesses in Ethiopia.
