Repi Land-Fill Power Project in Ethiopia to Begin Operation in 2016

Repi land-fill power project in Addis Ababa that would generate 50MW of electricity is to begin power generation in the coming seven months, according to Cambridge Industries, UK-based leading waste management firm.

Samuel Z. Alemayehu, Managing Director of Cambridge Industries in Ethiopia told The Reporter 75 percent of the USD 120 million waste-to-energy project is completed and will begin operation by 2016.

Samuel said the project is expected to process 1.5 million kilograms of waste a day in the Repi land-fill (Koshe), situated around Ayer Tena area. The project will have a capacity to process 500 million kilograms of waste into ash yearly which will be used to manufacture interlocked bricks.

The project will also help to collect 10 million kilograms of scrap metals out of the waste, Samuel said.

95 percent of the manufacturing stage of the plant has been completed, he stated. Turbines, turbine generators, boilers, fluid gas treatment systems are on the way to be shipped into the project site, he added.

Cambridge Industries has signed a deal with Ethiopian government in 2013 to undertake the project. The government has awarded the contract to Cambridge Industries on the basis of Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) turnkey project agreement.

One kilogram of waste daily piled on the street of the Addis Ababa is estimated to generate 20 percent of the power that can be generated from one liter of diesel oil. Therefore, 1.4 million kilogram processed waste will generate power that is equivalent to 380 thousand liters of diesel oil.
