Ethiopia: George Shoe Corporation to Set Up New Plant

The Taiwanese George Shoe Corporation also known as George Gloria Group (3G) is to erect another manufacturing plant in Ethiopia worth USD 120 million, The Reporter reported.

George Shoe installed its factory a year ago at Bole-Lemi Industrial Zone where it has leased two sheds.

O.K. Kaul, General Manager of the Corporation told The Reporter the new plant is situated in Modjo town and it will be completed within five years. George Shoe plans to produce five million feet leather a month and shoe production is planned for the next year, the Manager stated.

George Shoe has started production a year ago and managed to export a container of pairs of shoes and this year’s export is expected to increase to five to six containers. The factory at the Bole-Lemi Industrial Park reaches full capacity will employ around 1,000 regular workers with 100 percent of goods to be exported to China and the US markets.

The government has spent Birr 349 million for the development of five sheds at Bole-Lemi and additional Birr 1.76 billion is needed for the remaining 15 factories, according to the information gathered from Ministry of Industry.
