Ethiopia: Hurmud Camel Milk Company to be Constructed in Jigjiga

The second Camel milk processing company is to be constructed in Jigjiga Town, Ethiopia, according to Addis Fortune.

Hurmud is named after Hurmud Pastoralists Cooperative is already engaged in supplying of camel milk to Jigjiga.

The construction of the processing plant will begin in the coming two months on 4,000 square meter area, already in possession of major owner of the company, Kelif Abdiyusouf.

The company is expected to be open in 2016.

Kelif Abdiyusouf, has been in the camel milk business for the last 10 years. He collects up to 4,500 liters of Camel milk a day and distribute to the Jigjiga region. The raw Camel milk is collected by the member of the cooperative from pastoralists. Kelif is chairperson of the cooperative whose members can supply up to 9,000 liters daily to the factory and other users.

According to Mohammed Negash, Manager of the company said, the company will distribute its processed Camel milk to Dire Dawa, Addis Ababa, Adama and Harari, like wise to neighboring countries, Djibouti, Somali and Puntland.

He also stated, Up to 5,000 liters of Camel milk is expected to be processed and available for market from raw milk that will be collected from Jigjiga and its surroundings.

According to a study conducted by Haramaya University and Milk and Meat Development, Ethiopia is estimated to have 4.5 million Camels in Oromia, Afar, Dire Dawa, Harari and Somali Regions.
