Ethiopia: MoT to Lead Chamber as Caretaker

Ethiopia’s Federal Court passed a judgment which gives Ministry of Trade (MoT) the authority to form a caretaker board.

The presiding judge, Sentayehu Zeleke, rendered a judgment that is different from what the two litigating parties, Addis Ababa Chamber of Commerce and Sectoral Associations (AACCSA) and United Insurance Share Company (UNIC), hoped for.

UNIC requested Ethiopian Chamber of Commerce and Sectoral Associations administer the organization. It also noted MoT along with the Addis Ababa City Trade and Industry Development Bureau should be included on the board until afresh 9th general assembly is held.

On the other hand AACCSA requested for the Addis Ababa City Trade and Industry Development Bureau to lead the chamber and manage the coming election.

However, the court ruled the affairs of the chamber as well as the coming general assembly shall be governed by the MoT and the newly elected board can take the position.

The court furthered the board shall incorporate the Addis Ababa City Trade and Industry Development Bureau and Ethiopian Chamber. It also ordered for a new 9th general assembly that will be facilitated by the caretaker board.

The caretaker board will in addition to all these be responsible for leading and managing the Chamber until an election is made. The court also noted the caretaker board must always consult the court if it needs additional rulings.
