Ethiopia: Meisso-Dewel Railway’s Construction 65 Percent Completed

Meisso-Dewele Railway Project, which is being constructed at the cost of USD 1.9 Billion has reached 65 percent completion rate.

The project is being carried out with the aim of modernizing Ethiopia’s railway system. It expected to significantly improve the socio economic interaction of Ethiopia’s eastern part.

The Railway project is being carried out by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation and it is schedule to be completed and go operational by next year.

Meisso-Dewele is part of the two direction railway program aimed at linking Ethiopia with Djibouti.

According to the Project Manager Kalkidam Shentema earth moving task of the project reached 96 percent completion rate while laying tracks has covered 175 Kilometers out of the total 360 Kilometers. Electric poles and six power stations have already been constructed.

Thus far the project created more than 8,000 job opportunities and it is also playing a crucial role in transferring knowledge as well as technology.

Commenting on the progress Dire Dawa’s Mayor, Ased Ziyad, said the railway will boost Dire Dawa’s as well as the entire Eastern part of the nation’s industrial, trade and services sectors.
