Ethiopia: Toshiba Concluded MoU with Ethiopian Electric Power

ToshibaToshiba Corporation disclosed it concluded a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Ethiopian Utility company, Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP), for a comprehensive partnership in geothermal power. The MoU stipulates EEP and Toshiba will collaborate in power generation
projects and personnel development.

According to Toshiba, the agreement will enable it to draw on its longstanding experience and expertise in geothermal systems to contribute to projects in Ethiopia. The collaboration is going to be in particular on Toshiba developing and manufacturing major equipment, create operation and management guidelines, cooperate in personnel development, and start a waste heat utilization business.

Ethiopia’s geothermal resource has a capacity of generating 6,000 megawatts. Nonetheless, the nation has not managed to explore and develop this resource. It generates 90 percent of its electricity frpm hydroelectric sources.

The East African nation intends to increase its current installed generating capacity of 2,268 megawatts to 37,000 megawatts by the year 2037. The development of geothermal power is expected to play a pivotal role in achieving this goal.

According to data from Toshiba, the company has the world’s largest market share for geothermal equipment with 24% of total installed capacity.
