Ethiopia: Authority to Launch Market Information System for Industrial Products

Ethiopia’s Trade Competition and Consumer Protection Authority announced it is going to launch a market information system for international industrial products.

According to the Authority’s Market Information, Complaint, Interpretation and Dissemination Director, Etissa Deme, preparation has been wrapped up to launch a market information system which will enable Ethiopian business community to get market prices from elsewhere. He added the system will also incorporate free SMS and a website of which the latter is being developed by the support of Bahir Dar University.

Currently the market information of 700 agricultural products is being served by the Authority. 

The Authority obtains market information from Addis Ababa and the states of Amhara, Oromia, Tigray and Southern Nations Nationalities and Peoples, the Director said. He added they are working to get information from the remaining states.

According to Etissa information from the capital will be disseminating every day using different means. As to market data from states, it will be disseminated once a well. The means the Authority will use for disseminating the data will be SMS, the website it will develop, media and cooperatives.

Other than current prices of products for the business community, the website is said to inform the general public about levels of products and internationally banned items.

The Ethiopian Herald wrote the Authority is working in collaboration with the Ethiopian Conformity Assessment Enterprise and Ethiopian Standardization Authority to achieve its aims.
