Ethiopian City Bus Service Introduces One Birr Trips

The Addis Ababa, Ethiopia City Bus Services Enterprise (Anbessa) launched one birr trips during peak hours as of last week.

The one birr trips will be operational from 6-9 am in the mornings and 4-9pm in the evenings. The enterprise has introduced a trial run on a range of route numbers including of 4, 22, 28, 36, 37, 49, 54, 59, 77 and 93.

As per the new arrangement, for example, the number four buses travelling between Kaliti and Merkato will finish their journey at the Saris bus stop at peak hours to shorten the time passengers from Kaliti have to wait between buses explained Bekele Getaneh, Head of the Communications Affairs Sub Process with Anbessa.

The enterprise will assess the effectiveness of the new program on the trial routes before applying it to all routes said Bekele.

The new trips are part of changes that are being conducted at the City Bus enterprise under BPR reorganization.

The BPR reorganization initiative will put into effect other changes. Amongst the changes being effected includes the three depots operated by the enterprise becoming more autonomous under their own management instead of being managed by case team coordinators.

The new managers of the depots other than the one at the head office will be able to determine the number of buses to be deployed on each route, bus reassignments and the length of routes with the ultimate approval residing of the General Manager of Anbessa.
