Yordanos Hospital is mainly engaged in the services for road traffic accident (Trauma) and orthopedics (Back pains, Arthritis, and other musculoskeletal problems) with 50 beds and over 100 staff in Ethiopia.

Objectives of the Yordanos Hospital

• Rendering health services to the community through cost recovery at reasonable margins in order to make the services sustainable
• Facilitating emergency services.
• Rehabilitating the disables
• Creating optional job opportunities to professionals
• Participating in disseminating government’s health policies and strategies
• When appropriate, treating of poor patients free of charge.

Goals of the Hospital

There are many difficulties in delivering trauma and orthopedic  care in this country. Patient care is hampered by shortage of equipment and funds. Normally 40% of the surgery cases are orthopedic and trauma. This number is greatly increased by catastrophes and war conflicts. Diagnoses vary from bone tumors to osteomyelitis, including TB; from congenital deformities to post-traumatic disabilities. Fractures are of every description imaginable with open draining wounds, malunions, nonunions, etc. The cases are truly challenging and the caseload unending.
The tremendous number of injuries from all causes of bone disease and trauma are overwhelming. This adds a great burden on the economy of the country when often simple orthopedic correction could make these patients earning members of the society.
     
The goal of this hospital is there fore to augment the existing health service in order to achieve a positive change in the overall health status in general and to create a strong and well organized specialized orthopedic, trauma and emergency services in particular, which could cover not only the country of Ethiopia, but also the whole region of East Africa.

ORTHOPAEDICS

Our Hospital is primarily dealing with the status and function of bones and joints. Clinical evaluation and conservative or surgical treatment of the bones and joints often involves or is extended to include the nerves and muscle s that responsible for their movements and the state of the bones themselves. Here are treated almost all orthopaedic conditionsof congenital or acquired problems Congenital and developmental abnormalitie Infection and inflammation

• Arthritis and rheumatic disorders
• Metabolic dysfunction and degeneration
• Tumours and lesions that mimic them
• Sensory disturbance and muscle weakness
• Injury and mechanical derangement

TRAUMA

Is actually any physical damage to the body caused. by violence, accident or fracture,etc.
Treatment of this condition actually should begin at the scene of the accident. Unfortunately this part of trauma treatment has not been experienced due to lack of organization which we hope we will tackle the problem in the near future.
Once the patient reaches our hospital the he undergoes all the basic post-trauma assessment and evaluation and major resuscitation work is done quickly in the case of emergencies or planned treatments are started for the latecomers.
Definitive treatments of fractures are done conservatively or surgically depending up on their types those could be

• Closed reduction
• Open reduction
• Continuous fraction
• Functional bracing
• Internal fixation
• External fixation

Couples with the above are exercises which help to restore function – not only to the injured parts but also to the patient as a whole.

 

JOINT REPLACEMENT

Total Hip Replacement is one of the major activities of Yordanos Hospital. THR are done for osteoarthiritic hips, mainly of older ages. He have been doing them for the last six years and the results have been very much rewarding.

• Partial Hip Replacements are also done specifically for old fractures of necks of femurs which went to non union or malunion.
• Recently we frequently use Bipolar replacements of the hips instead of using Thompsons and Austin Moores.

ARTHROSCOPY

Our hospital has been using this surgical procedure for the last six years. Conditions like Osteoarthiritis (Osteochondritis Desicans, Loose Bodies) torn menisci and cruciate ligaments are treated using arthroscopy

NEUROSURGERY

Many of neurosurgical conditions Associated with head injury or spine injuries are dealt by our experienced neurosurgeons.
Neurological conditions caused by degeneration, disc prolapses, chronic infectious conditions like tuberculosis or tumors or tumerlike lesions are also dealt with accordingly in our well equipped surgical facility.

HAND & CLEFT LIP SURGERY

A group of plastic surgeons is working in our hospital in collaboration of the children’s charity for cleft lip and cleft palate surgeries -operation smile. These are experienced plastic surgeons that have done several hundreds of children with congenital defect of cleft lips and cleft palates. They are also engaged in correction of congenital and acquired. hand and foot conditions and cosmetic plastic surgeries.

EMERGENCY

Organization of emergency Services is always a priority for Yordanos Hospital.The service is led by Dr. Medfer Alemu, a well experienced Physician. He heads the whole team of outpatient and. inpatient departments.
Patients are received all 24/7. night, weekend and holiday duties are all covered. Very well equipped ambulances and their drivers are at the disposal of our patients.

LABRATORY

The hospitals laboratory is again led by the most experienced and highly knowledgeable senior technician who teaches and leads the rest of his group. The laboratory is will equipped and up to date. It is a well organized and supports the treatment process with a well organized Bacteriology and blood banking and transfusion work.

PHARMACY

The hospital Inpatient and outpatient pharmacies are organized and led again by a very much experienced and out standing pharmacist and pharmacy technicians.

PHYSIOTERAPHY

Our physical therapy department is organized with a group of experienced therapists that use exercise and massage and offer modalities of therapeutic equipments. This is the most experienced group of therapists that work from seven in the morning to seven in the evening.
Our conservative and surgical work is highly dependent the physical therapy treatment we are giving in most instances.

X-RAY

Is equipped with digital x-ray facility and locally networked with offer departments. Has very well experienced personnel led by Lt- Befekadu Nurfeta.

OT

This department is fully equipped with essential facilities and professional OR personnel ready for emergency or planned surgical interventions. Rooms are supplied with clean, warm and cold lamellar air flows; very essential for prevention of air contamination.
