The cornerstone for ‘Abesha’ Brewery was laid in Amhara Regional State, Ethiopia. The brewery is to be built at a cost of 650 million birr.
Ayalew Goebeze Chief of Amhara Regional State Administration laid the cornerstone for the brewery.
The brewery is to be built on a 7.5 hectare plot of land and is expected to open employment opportunities for 350 people.Preparation work for the construction of the brewery, to be completed in 15 months, has already begun.
Investment in the brewery sector has intensified in Ethiopia with international brewer Diageo joining the scene with the purchase of Meta Abo Brewery.
Diageo plc plans to increase its share of Ethiopia’s beer market from 15% to 50% as it finalizes its takeover of Meta Ambo Brewery, Ethiopia. The international liquor manufacturer would like to develop the business and overcome the competition in Ethiopia according Ekwunife Okoli, Head of African regional markets for Diageo.
BGI Ethiopia has also targeted to increase its share in the beer market in Ethiopia with a 30% stake worth 75 million birr in the newly established Raya Brewery.
The partnership between BGI Ethiopia, an established beer producer in the country, and the new brewery is expected to make the two companies highly competitive on the national market.
