Turkish Company, Karel, is set to enter the Ethiopian telecommunications market. The company is interested in investing in the Ethiopian market which is dominated by only a few companies according to Umut Oner Accounts Manager of Karel.

Karel, a Private Branch Exchange (PBX) manufacturer, is an internationally recognized producer of telecommunications equipment explained promoters. It hopes to be able to introduce Voice Over IP and Closed Circuit TV services to the Ethiopian market. The services haven’t been allowed in Ethiopia as of yet.

View Computer Engineering has agreed with Karel to supply its products on the Ethiopian market according to Esayas Efa Managing Director. Karel offers a range of PBX products including a product that can support 32,000 system lines said Esayas.

PBX products like Alcatel, Panasonic, Uni phone are already available on the Ethiopian market.  Fifteen companies are registered with the government Telecommunications Agency to provide PBX services in Ethiopia.

There is a shortage of supply and variety in the products available on the Ethiopian market at the present according to Behailu Tsegaye, Head of the Technical Department of Edom Communications a registered PBX provider in Ethiopia.

It will be important for more manufacturers to enter the market to induce development and growth say experts in the sector.
