Ethiopian University Selects Designs for Expansion Group

Hawassa University, Ethiopia selected designs for additional buildings to be constructed as part of its expansion program.

The winners of the competition were BET Architects, K2N Consulting Architecture and Engineers plc and were each awarded 50,000 birr for their designs.

Competing companies were asked to deliver designs for one of the projects that the University is undertaking said Denbeshu Nuaere, Construction and Maintenance Director with the University.

The university had carried out two other design competitions previously since it began its expansion projects.

Designs were selected on the basis of their historical, geographical  and cultural value as architecture lasts for a long time according to Denbeshu.

The design presented by K2N was described as utilizing an integrated approach, to design a climate-responsive conducive laboratory according to Brook Tefera, Secretary of the Jury.

The design submitted by BET Architects presented a strong master plant complementing other buildings on the campus said the jury.

Designs that were selected for the second and third place prizes received 34,00o birr and 25,000 birr each.
