Indian Company to Build Sugar Mill

Razia Agro Industry, an Indian company, is going to set up a sugar mill in the east Wollega zone of the Oromia Regional State.

According to an official of Razia, the company has acquired 4,000 hectares of land for sugarcane plantation and the construction of the mill. The official said that the company had already started clearing the land for developing the sugarcane farm.

The Indian campany has a registered capital of 131 million birr. The construction of the sugar mill is schedule to start next year according to the senior executive of Razia Agro Industry. After its completion the factory will have an installed capacity of producing 1,200 tonnes of sugar a day.

The government is building a 725 million dollar sugar factory at Tendaho, an addition to its existing factories at  Finchaa, Metehara and Wonji. The Tendaho sugar factory in the Afar Regional State will be th largest in the country.

Meanwhile, Al Abesh, a Pakistani company, has built a sugar factory in Woellega zone of the Ormia Regional State, which will be inaugurated soon.

The Ethiopian government hopes to boost sugar production to 2.5 million tons from the current 300,000 tons within five years.

Razia's sister company, Sainik Potash, has been working on a potash development project in the Afar Regional State since 2007. The investment group, Sainik, is planning to establish another new company which will be engaged in marble production in Ethiopia.
